While I was in the construction process of the Mirror-O-Matic I had ordered a 10" an 8" plate glass kit. Here is the 10" ready for fine grinding. The only part I could not find locally was the toggle pad used in the overarm assembly. This part I ordered from Reid Tool Supply Company. The 8" came at a later time then the 10".

I assume you are talking about a telpe mirror. I have read a lot and ground one small mirror some years ago but did it all by hand. If I remember properly, some of the features you want in a grinding machine are the ability to change the stroke's length as well as the path it takes across the surface (radial, cordial).

I will need a slow speed for polishing (5 rpm), and faster speeds for hogging out and fine grinding (15- 30 rpm), so likely need to think about adding a gear reduction.

Gordon Waite is probably one of the better mirror makers using this machine and have incorporated some of his ideas into my plan. I like the fixed-post plan vs others with eccentric drives, because it gets the heavy grinding done in an automated manner, but still give you the chance to hand-figure.

The stepped tool will only be of average accuracy but will wear into the curve faster because at first the tools and mirror will only be touching on the ridges. The tilted milling machine method will give a very smooth surface with no ridges. If you can machine with a tolerance of 0.0001",the tool and mirror will match perfectly.
