The grinder tool rest can be used with 6" or 8" utility bench grinders and many belt sanders/grinders. It mounts directly to the bench in front of the grinder and can be readily folded out of the way for freehand grinding. The 4" wide table straddles wheels up to 1" wide. It is grooved for sliding jigs and center drilled for rotating jigs.
1 inch belt sander Carol, I have a 1" belt sander and use it for Wood and metal. I haven't tried using a wolverine jig, but use a bunch of other stuff on it. I'm in the middle of making a KMG type sanding rig as I'm making more and more of my jigs and tools. My 1" is a POS, really noisy, but it works and for many thing much better than the grinder.
It slides back and forth across the tool rest groove on the Veritas® Grinder Tool Rest, but it also has riding ledges which allow it to be used with other tool rests. Clamps solidly and aligns perfectly to tool to be sharpened. Use on 6" and 8" grinders and belt sanders ; Also works with other tool rests

of 1/2"), the wheel post will be too short. To fi x this problem, you will have to shim the wheel mount. Cut a spacer about 1" × 1" × 3/4" thick. Remove the wheel mount (part number S-5-5-1) and the spring (S-5-6), and put the spacer in the tube. Re-insert the spring and the wheel mount. This should now provide enough tension to the belt.

Details. The Veritas® Tool Rest mounts solidly to your bench in front of the grinder and provides a sturdy, square support that can be folded out of the way for free hand grinding operations. The 4"-wide tool rest may be used with 6" or 8" grinders and can straddle wheels up to 1" wide. It also works well as a tool rest for belt sanders.
A quick way of repeating an existing bevel angle was to hold the chisel against the wheel and rest the tool on the tool rest. Then using my thumb and two fingers(one above and one below the tool rest) I was able to hold the chisel on a pivot point. Turn on the grinder and lightly touch the wheel with the chisel. It gave me a nice clean facet.

I've found that frequent touch-ups on the grinder work better than less frequent hard grindings. Also, the grinder gives a good burr to scrapers or the edge of bowl gouges used inverted for skew-scraping. One thing I WOULD like to add is a pair of good-quality adjustable tool rests that can be set up and left for things like bowl scrapers.
Most grinders come with 3 ⁄ 4 "-wide wheels, but 1"- or 1 1 ⁄ 4 "-wide wheels sharpen wider tools without sliding the tool side-to-side. To install wide wheels on many grinders you'll have to replace the bell-shaped flanges—which eat up 1 ⁄ 2 " or more of the arbor shaft on each side of the wheel—with thinner supports.
09-28-2011, 11:35 AM. Re: lee valley (viel) belt sander: wheel alignment. SO. I had a look and did some measuring on my sander. The platen is square to the frame of the machine on mine but would be readily adjustable if it were off by a bit by either shimming it or by realigning (bending it) it with a vise and mallet.

The only grinder I've used before is the belt grinder Lee Valley sells. It worked well enough in the class, but you buy it you also need to buy an electrical motor separately, and unless I am looking in the wrong place that is going to be atleast $40, so all told I'd be looking at about $150 after tax.
I bought one of the Lee Valley 1" strip sanders. I had a motor already so I just bought the sander. The tool rest came with it but it was hard to adjust. I took the bolt out that came with it and added a longer carriage bolt, a spacer and a plastic handle to tighten it. This made adjusting it much easier and it now locks in place.

If you have a 1" belt grinder, those work quite well for drawknives, since there is no motor to interfere with the knife's handles. Take a look at Pete's blog for lots of info on grinding. As you 'll see, you can do it quick and dirty, or make a full blown micro-adjustable tool rest.

This 1" belt sander is an excellent sharpening center as well as a handy sander. It removes steel quickly and coolly. It can be used for freehand grinding of a range of tools and is ideal for carving and lathe tools. It does a superb job on kitchen knives. The 4" × 6 1/2" tool rest has a groove to accept sliding jigs.
There are basically two commercial rests I know of: the Veritas Grinding Jig sold by Lee Valley Tool and the Grind-R-Table sold by GRS Tools. The latter is more useful for lathe tools as the height is not altered by the relief adjustment. Then again, it is also about twice the price. 09-30-2011, 09:14 AM #6. Pete Wass.
