The following equation is used to calculate deflection (y) of a boring bar: y = FL 3 /3EI (1) Where. F is the cutting force, lbf or N. L is the unsupported length of a boring bar (overhang), in. or mm. E is the modulus of elasticity (in tension) of a …
Making a boring bar for the lathe. Actually I made six boring bars but I have only a video of making one.
An analysis of the traditional design of a boring bar showed that there are two approaches to improving the construction of the boring bar so as to achieve efficient use of the service life of the grinding wheel: first, development and fabrication of boring bars of lesser diameter, and, second, creation of additional special surfaces on the ...
The HSS boring bars with right angle bend mentioned by Tony are readily available, just need to grind the end to width of the groove. Another option is a double ended bar which can use inexpensive 1/8in square HSS cutters. An example from Grizzly, but this style is available at many locations.
Almost every "help the noob" guide I've seen walks you through grinding 60* external threading tools, then says "now do the same thing for the internal geometry" without even hinting how you'd grind the inside edge. I'm trying to make the "hook" type tool as opposed to the "insert in boring bar" type due to some geometry constraints.
Unlike drills or reamers, single-edge boring bars have a single point of contact with the workpiece. As a result, the bar is unsupported, which sometimes leads to vibration, or chatter. Problems with chatter are the only significant drawback to these cutting tools. Steel bars tend to chatter once the axial DOC exceeds 4 diameters deep.
Don't remember where I got 'em (probably an auction), but I have 3 or 4 'boring bars' someone made of regular square lathe tool bits, by grinding a substantial radius on the lower left corner, as you look from the back, for an inch or so. Looking at the cutting end they're about a quarter circle. Took a lot of grinding, but they really work great.
start with a round blank, split one end on center, (at one time you could buy round blanks with split ends from mcmaster) 1/4" back from the …
Could always grind up a tool bit to the right profile, stick it in a boring bar in the mill, and use the quill as a vertical shaper Yes, and that's also a good call on how to make a truly long length rack.
Grind a flat on the bit where the boring bar grub screw engages as the boring bars don't hold the bits that well and you can get some suprise dimension changes 05-25-2007, 12:23 PM #4. wippin' boy. Step 1: Selection of Boring Bar. There are three types of boring bars with their own specifications and benefits. High-Speed Steel (HSS) HSS is cheaper and tougher. It can be easily re-tipped on a standard grinder and honing stone if the cutting edges wear. Brazed Carbide Boring Bar. It can cut 2.5-5 times faster than HSS.
A T-land on the original tool would have kept it from chipping so much here but hand grinding these on a boring bar is an art where you scrap a few while learning. So for boring bar having .5 " diameter and insert tip clearing that diameter by .015, it means that from centerline of the bar to cutting tip you have .265" distance, you double that value and you come up with .53 as minimum bore diameter meaning that shank of the bar will clear bore by .015 all around at smallest diameter bar is intended to cut.
Q125-L with 60" boring bar + 1 extra bearing, extra bearing plate and 2 extra standoffs: $3095. 1.25" diameter x 40" long Boring Bar - chrome plated induction hardened and precision ground 100,000 PSI high tensile strength alloy steel. The chrome resists burrs and scoring to still fit the bearings use after use.
A steel shank boring bar extended more then 4 or 5 diameters using a negative rake insert is likely to chatter, positive rake triangle or DCMT inserts with a very small nose radius work best for this. A carbide shank bar is best. Different tools for …
Grind the end of the bar with at least ten degrees clearance, and about 7 degrees relief. You can then face the bottom of the bore with the same bar. Careful not to feed into the back side of the bore (plan on it!) 04-14-2013, 03:23 AM#3 silentool View Profile View Forum Posts Plastic Join Date Jan 2007 Location Norway Posts 17
Just a quick little video of me making a small boring tool out of a piece of 1/4 inch high speed steel. Comments, critique, and or suggestions are welcome.
Boring is a preferred method of producing accurate sized holes in manufacturing. Boring offers distinct benefits over other hole making strategies such as reaming. Hole boring comes with a unique set of rules. This guide helps address those rules and will aid in maximising the cost benefits of your boring bar investment.
Grinding lines should always be perpendicular to the cutting edge. If the lines are parallel to the edge, the edge will be more fragile. As an example, drill sharpening fixtures are usually shown set up on the horizontal centerline of the wheel, making the grinding lines parallel to the cutting edge.

MICRO-MINI boring bar can be applied to boring and grooving without any modifications. It can also be reground as shown below. For shaping and regrinding, use diamond wet stone approximately #250 - #400. Please grind according to application using the figure below as a reference. Rollomatic offers the GrindSmart model 630XW machine with new capabilities for the production grinding of solid-carbide boring bars and other stationary cutting tools. Featuring six fully interpolating CNC axes and a six-station wheel/nozzle changer, the machine can be adapted for individual boring bar designs for short and long runs.
the bore, and the boring bar it'self. Sometimes I will grind chip clearance on the bar to help curl the chips foreward out of the way. When using heavy industrial machinery, varying the depth of cut, and feed, can control chip formation on some materials. I will lower the depth of cut, and increase the feed

Side rake (1) is ideally chosen to suit the material being machined, with 10 to 15° for mild steel and 20 to 25° for free cutting mild steel and aluminium being normal in the case of a knife tool.
This also keeping the hands further from the grinding wheel. The boring tools will produce a minimum hole sizes a little above the diameter of the high speed steel blank on which it is being formed. When forming a boring tool the working end is similar to a knife tool used on external diameters, Sk. 2A,, there are though two exceptions.

The bar is just like a normal boring bar from a lathe, with a ½"square hole through the end at 90°, but modified to attach to the tool post hole in the clapper. Bars are made of 1045 or 4140 steel, on one end a square hole is cut into the bar to hold the key way cutter bit. In …
